Water Falling

In 2014 Amorphis participated in the design of three villas as part of a larger development located in the Yanqi Lake of the Huairou district within the fifth ring of Beijing, China. The development consists of a hotel/spa designed by Tadao Ando, two types of “traditional” tract villas designed by local architects, and custom modern lakeside villas designed by international firms. The area was politically charged in that the lake was the site for the 2014 APEC (Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation) summit.

Amorphis was given lot SS-27. Our strategy was to combine local symbolism through Chinese Waterfall paintings and vernacular form into a narrative that promotes the tension between the artificial and the natural. If Wright’s Fallingwater can be understood as architecture’s authentic integration with nature then SS-27 can be understood as its consumption of nature through technology and culture.
